Ostracod Night Dives in 2026: An Extraordinary Bioluminescent Encounter at Scuba St. Lucia

Witness one of the ocean’s most elusive natural spectacles—the ostracod spawning event—right here on the house reef at Scuba St. Lucia.

Ostracods are minute crustaceans, measuring less than 2 mm, yet they create a display of astonishing beauty. Each month, precisely timed to the lunar cycle, they release pulses of bioluminescent light into the water column to attract a mate. Each species produces its own distinct pattern, forming delicate, pearl-like spirals that drift upward through the dark—an underwater light show unlike any other.

This phenomenon is known to occur in only a handful of locations worldwide, and our pristine house reef offers ideal conditions to experience it firsthand. With virtually no light pollution and calm, shallow waters (less than 10 feet deep), the setting is perfectly suited for observing this rare courtship ritual. The dive’s easy access and depth make it suitable for certified divers of all experience levels.

The timing of each spawning event is exact, guided by the full moon and the brief window between sunset and moonrise. Our marine biologists carefully monitor these cycles and can accurately predict the optimal dates and times for viewing—ensuring guests have the very best chance to witness this natural wonder.
